PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS TO CREATE A NATIONAL MISSING PERSONS AWARENESS DAY

National Missing Persons Awareness Day will focus the attention of Canadians to recognize missing persons.

When such a large part of our lives is missing it leaves a profound void. It’s not a fillable space. Those who have experienced it, know.

Everyone has a friend, mother, sibling, child, neighbour or coworker they see every day. No one expects to have them mysteriously and with no explanation to disappear from their lives. It’s a challenging thought to contemplate, which is why it’s often hard to attract the attention of those unfamiliar with the missing person to become involved.

We often think it won’t happen to us. When a person goes missing, it can be an adult as often as it is a child. There is an epidemic of missing Indigenous peoples in Canada. Health risks, natural disasters, unplanned circumstances and of course, those who are taken against their will fall into the list of statistics. They can all apply to us.

The families of those who go missing, neighbours and friends need our support to continue the search, to keep getting the word out.

A Canadian National Missing Persons Awareness Day will encourage everyone to be alert, share missing persons names, pictures and bring the missing people of Canada home to their families.

The Petition

Whereas:

  • In recognition of the Government of Canada’s responsibility to promote public safety;
  • In recognition of the need to raise awareness of Canada’s missing;
  • In recognition of the many countries that have already declared a National Missing Persons Day; and
  • In recognition of providing a day of awareness, remembrance, consolation, and call to action to support the families and friends of the thousands of Canadians who go missing each year.

We, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to declare and create a National Missing Persons Awareness Day, during which communities across the country could gather in remembrance of their missing loved ones and advocate for resources to reduce the frequency of disappearances and to support those left behind.
