Water search comes up empty for missing Ottawa man

A search of the Ottawa River by boat was called off Friday for a missing man who may not have returned from a kayak on the turbulent waters.

David Stewart, 48, was last seen on Ridge Valley Drive in the Bayshore area at 5 p.m. Wednesday. After he was reported missing, his vehicle was discovered at Britannia Park near the Ottawa River without his green kayak.

On Thursday, police and firefighters searched the water’s surface with a number of small boats but found nothing.

Missing person officers continue to investigate Stewart’s disappearance, an Ottawa Police Services spokeswoman said.

Stewart is five feet, 10 inches tall and 160 pounds with shoulder-length dark brown hair with some grey. He has some facial hair and a tattoo of a bulldog on his shoulder.

Anyone with information about his current whereabouts is asked to call city police at 613-236-1222.

Those with other information that could help investigators are asked to call the missing person unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 2355, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by downloading the Ottawa police app.

On Thursday, the fire department warned people to avoid area waterways as levels fluctuate.
